Shower Head Germs

Shower Head Germs

The damp and warm bathroom you step out into after you take a hot shower is the perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria. You likely notice that when you clean your shower and see the buildup of soap scum and the beginnings of mold starting to grow at the very edge of your shower curtain. One place often missed when many people clean their shower is the shower head. Plastic shower heads are more prone to bacteria and mold growth than metal shower heads, but metal is certainly not immune. We recommend scrubbing and cleaning your shower head at least once a week to keep bacteria growth to a minimum. What’s the best way to clean your shower head? All you really need is a plastic bag, some white vinegar, and a toothbrush!

Directions

  • Partially fill up the plastic bag with white vinegar.
  • Place the bag over the shower head so the entirety of it is submerged in the vinegar.
  • Use a twist tie or string to secure the bag around the shower head.
  • Let soak for several hours. Note: Don’t leave brass, gold, or nickel-plated shower heads in vinegar for longer than 30 minutes as it can tarnish the finish.
  • Remove the bag from the shower head. Dispose of vinegar down the drain and allow hot water to run for a minute to flush out any remaining vinegar and bacteria.
  • Scrub away any leftover buildup with an old toothbrush, especially around where the water comes out. Turn on the hot water again when you are finished to ensure your shower head is all clean!
  • Buff the shower head dry with a soft cloth to dry!

Follow these steps above to get on the right track to taking the cleanest shower of your life!
