Beat the Heat!

Beat the Heat!

While a lot of good things come from being outside, there can be a few negatives as well, especially when it’s this hot out...

One thing people don’t usually think about while spending a lot of time outside in the sun is the possibility of getting heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs from spending too much time in a hot environment, especially if you are being active. The heat produced from your own body while being active or exercising combined with the heat outside is a sure combination for heat exhaustion. So, be extra careful if you’re out exercising in the heat or if your kiddos are out running about outside enjoying their summer vacation.

To be aware of when heat exhaustion strikes, we need to know its symptoms.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:

  • Weak pulse
  • Excessive sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Cool, moist skin

If you, or a loved one, are suffering from heat exhaustion it’s best to move to a cooler place. Though, don’t immediately introduce them to a much colder environment as that can possibly send a body into shock. Take them inside into an air-conditioned room and let them sit down to relax. Don’t let someone recovering from heat exhaustion immediately go try to take a cold shower. Remember that shock I mentioned earlier? That’s a way that can come about. Make sure the person suffering from heat exhaustion is staying hydrated and is resting. Drink plenty of water (and yes, WATER not sodas or sports drinks) to help your cells recover from the heat and all of the water your body likely lost from sweat.

If symptoms do not lessen after these steps, seek medical assistance at HealthCARE Express.

Try to stay cool out there, guys!
