Meningitis Vaccine

Dear Potential College Student:

Health issues may not be your first priority as you get ready to head off to college, but there are vaccine requirements for all new students entering college with which you must comply to keep your registration for classes from being affected.

A new Texas law mandates all students entering a college or university in Texas meet certain bacterial meningitis vaccine requirements. College students cannot register for classes until the college or university has received documentation that you have received a meningococcal vaccine during the five year period to, but no later than ten days before the first day of classes, of the semester you will enter college.

Bacterial meningitis is a very serious, potentially fatal illness. While it is fairly rare, young adults are at an increased risk. Failure to get vaccinated could result in a medical bar that prevents you from registering for classes at the Texas university you have chosen to attend.
